The Resort: Alpe d' Huez 3,330m

Alpe d'Huez is one of the highest resorts in the Alps, so unlike the Sierra Nevada, or even other resorts elsewhere in the Alps, there is a guarantee of a snow even at the beginning and end of the season. In addition because the resort is south facing there is still a lot of sun as well as the snow !

Located just over an hour from Grenoble, high in the Oisans Alps at 1,869 metres above sea level, Alpe d'Huez is the central resort of the Grandes Rousses Massif domain. It links the traditional mountain villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Villard Reculas, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and La Garde, which between them make up the 5th largest ski area in France.

Our Top Five reasons to ski in Alpe d' Huez

1. One of the top ten high altitude ski resorts in the French Alps. Guaranteed snow sure skiing.
2. Competes with the other big league ski resorts in extent and variety of slopes catering for all skiing ability.
3. Les Grandes Rousses Hotel is a genuine ski in and ski out, offering chalet style experience with excellent hotel services.
4. Sunday to Sunday holidays mean quieter roads, cheaper flights and quicker Airport/Resort transfers
5. Superb facilities for families and small children and one of the best in apres ski for all those die hard 48hour party animals.

Founded in 1936, Alpe d'huez has been a tried and tested favourite for years, the first drag lift was invented here by Jean Pomagalski and the resort is still breaking records today with the amount of sunshine it receives - 300 days per year!

The Skiing

Alpe d'huez is one of France's best resorts, a modern efficient lift network services 250kms of excellent skiing between 1,250 and 3,330m.

Beginners: Gentle lower slopes make for a large network of green runs; these are accessed by chairlifts rather than draglifts and are within especially designated "learning areas." With professional tuition from one of the numerous local ski schools beginners will soon find themselves venturing further up the mountain toward the Plat Des Marmottes.

Intermediates: Confident intermediates will find plenty here – practise your carving on the long Fare slope down to Vaujany, get your powder legs on the Dome des Petites Rousses and take on the Everest challenge – skiing over 8,000m in just 4 runs!

Advanced: Alpe D'huez has plenty of black runs and excellent off piste opportunity. Warm up with the Sarenne area and on Dome des Petites Rousses before taking on the record breaking Sarrene run. If you love moguls, we have them here too. Head over to the black "Tunnel" run down the front of Pic Blanc to get your fix. There is also an extensive snowpark and halfpipe to keep freestylers happy.

Your Hotel: Hotel Les Grandes Rousses in Alpe d'Huez.

Genuine SKI IN SKI OUT

A great location was chosen for this magnificent hotel in what is now the traditional part of town - closest to the bars, shops and resort facilities. It sits right at the foot of the Rif Nel ski run. You can ski straight off the slopes directly into the ski room and out again the next morning, to the bucket lift, which joins the main chairlift system running up to the vast ski area. Yes, this is genuine ski in ski out!

The hotel dominates the surrounding area, and from the large south facing balconies, guests have a beautiful view across the valley to the mountain ranges beyond – sit and enjoy the sunset after a great day’s skiing as you sip your first your pre-dinner cocktail. Alternatively, slip down to the 4Ms Bar and enjoy the early evening jazz melodies.

A chalet style experience with hotel service

Les Grandes Rousses is a very spacious hotel. The reception is warm and welcoming with a roaring open fire, the bars are bright and lively, there is free wifi access for those who have to stay in touch, and the “snug” areas are arranged so you can enjoy a chalet style experience with hotel service. The dining room offers an extensive menu, catering for all tastes and most evenings there will be entertainment for you to enjoy – unobtrusive, of course. On a Thursday evening, linger a little longer and get in the mood with the crooners, musicians and magicians - the week is beginning to liven up!

The bedrooms all have en-suite facilities and separate WC. They also come with that yester-year luxury of space, and they have all the mod-cons that today’s traveller expects - flat screen TV, wifi and a mini-bar stocked in accordance with your order.

Les Grandes Rousses Hotel is run entirely by the Take Me To (SKI) staff who go out of their way to create a friendly atmosphere with impeccable service and world class cuisine. Nothing is too much trouble. All Les Grandes Rousses Hotel holidays are on a Chalet Board basis - that is breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner with wine for the duration of your stay.
